Okay, I think I figured it out... you need to load the file with the "Import" function. And yes, you need to update, no matter when you buy the game (silly).

Anyone know how to compare players? Is there an easy way?

Ah **** nevermind, it's there on the right-click menu. Stupid question thread is stupid.
