First, 6.5 was a great engine. But it's outdated so I don't blame you for giving 12 a shot now.
They are totally different, I agree. But you'll get used to 12 just as you got used to 6.5.
Rating system: Just my opinion, but I have found the best way to play is to turn OFF actual ratings, and turn scouting on. This way you're getting a scouting report to read, you're seeing a potential rating based on your scouts opinion and in terms of "now" its based more on YOUR statistical analysis etc.
I rarely do offline, I tried one when I first got OOTP12 just to get familar, and with the way I play; I def. suggest simming some years first.
