Padres Silenced As A's Move On Behind Davis
Storm Davis Five Hit Shutout Is Enough To End Series
Qualcomm Stadium - As the series has moved to the later games in the spacious grounds of Qualcomm stadium the pitchers have been the forces and the runs have been hard to come by. On this night with everything on the line for the 1998 San Diego Padres, their bats went silent and the 1989 A's complete a dominant series win.
Storm Davis and Joey Hamilton are not at the top of their respective rotations but took advanatge of their chance to start in this series and both pitched good games. In a game that is dominanted by pitching also needs solid defense, and again this is where the Padres fell a little short.
A Ken Caminiti error at third base allowed the A's to score their first run when the third baseman made a bad throw to first. Rickey Henderson then added a two run single to score a second run and the A's had their lead behind Davis in the third inning. The score would stay that way until the 8th when Oakland ended any more drama.
Dan Miceli came on in relief for Hamilton with the bases loaded but walked in a run. After Jose Canseco struck out little Walt Weiss delivered a two run single and the A's were up by five runs.
The real story of the game was Davis however. The 27 year old right hander who had glory days in Baltimore was all that and more as the Padres couldnt get anything going; even Tony Gwynn went hitless in this one.
The Atletics do what most thought they would do and move past the Padres in this series. Tony Larussa and his men now move on to the final 32 of this competition.
