Rev,

The players are not rated on the immediate prior year's stats. They are rated on their abilities at the beginning of the season. My understanding is that for the '68 season, for example, the players' ability is estimated based on '68, '67, '66 and maybe '65 stats with reduced weight for less recent seasons.

A game based solely on the stats for the year in question assumes, wrongly, that a player's season's stats accurately represent his abilities. That is how Stratomatic and other games are structured.

Other games, such as OOTP attempt to rate on their real ability level. For example, I am a big Norm Cash fan, but he was never a legitimate .361 41 HR guy. Strat attempts to model so that a 1961 as played replay will generate those numbers. OOTP gives him some credit for that ability level since it is one of the years that his ratings are based upon, but it does not assume that season establishes that as a real ability level. If it was his real ability level, he would repeat it in the other years on which his rating is based and he would play at that level. Nonetheless, since the 61 season weighs most heavy in the 61 season ratings, Cash should have his best year in 61, but possibly not as good as in real life.
