Opening Day is here and the Huntsville Explorers host the Detroit Tigers to kick off 2012!
It was Justin Verlander on the hill for the Tigers and Brandon Beachy for the Explorers.
Alex Avila had the first RBI in Rocket City Ballpark as he drove in Austin Jackson in the first inning with a single. Detroit took a 1-0 lead but it didn't last long.
Prince Fielder hit the first home run in Huntsville history in the bottom of the 1st inning driving in Zachary Walters, who reached on a walk. The Explorers took a 2-1 lead.
Things were looking good going into the 5th inning as Huntsville had a 3-1 lead after Jay Bruce added a solo HR in the 4th. But the lead quickly disappeared as Brandon Beachy walked 2, allowed 2 hits and had an error committed behind him totaling for four runs and giving the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the 6th the Tigers add on two more as the night is done for Beachy. Sam LeCure comes in and pitches out of the inning. Score is 7-3 at that point.
That ends up being the final score of the game. LeCure, Morales and Guerrero pitch 3.2 scoreless innings to hold the Tigers at 7, but Justin Verlander finished strong going 8 innings and striking out 9 for the win.
Next game:
Max Scherzer @ Ricky Romero.
