ORIOLES STORY OF OPENING WEEK
The Baltimore Orioles were no fancied by many to compete in the Amercian League East of the Cooperstown Baseball League. After ten games however it is the Orioles with the best record in baseball and an early significant lead over the likes of the Yankees and the Red Sox.
The Orioles are 9-1 and swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium to stun the league. George Sisler is batting .390 and Frank Robinson has hit three home runs. Earl Weaver coiuldnt be happier about his balanced roster and it will be thrilling to see just how far this teams can go.
DAVID ORTIZ AMONG OTHERS GET REPLACED
With a league so competetive changes among these rosters have already started to come in. The first current casualty is David Ortiz who has only one hit in 32 times at the plate. Ortiz cant seem to figuire things out and will be replaced in the Boston lineup. Mo Vaughn will get his chance in the DH position as the Red Sox look for a spark after their 5-5 start.
Dutch Leonard will also replace Luis Tiant in the rotation currently.
In Cincinnati Jose Rijo will take his 9.00 ERA to the bench and on will come Mario Soto who has been waiting for his chance to take the mound and help the Reds who are 6-4 this season.
In St. Louis Joaquin Andujar will get a chance to start as Bill Doak has lost his first two starts and has just been battered around the yard. Andujar throws hard and will be intersting to watch.
PLAYER AWARDS
American League
Ken Griffey Jr - Seattle Mariners
Junior has helped the Mariners to four wins in their first 10 games and has doen so with five home runs in those games. Junior is batting .423 and is a big part to why the Mariners lead the league in home runs. Even in the Cooperstown league Junior may have the prettiest swing in the game.
National League
Johnny Mize - St. Louis Cardinals
Everyone thought that the player of the week would come from St. Louis but not everyone expected it to be Johnny Mize. The Big cat beat out Albert Pujols for the award with 12 RBI and a .438 average. Anyway you look at it however the Cardinals have been pounding the baseball in the first 10 games of the season.
