Starter Luke Hochevar was again denied in his bid for his first victory of the season, despite pitching eight strong innings for the Royals against AL Central rival Detroit on Friday.

Hochevar allowed just eight hits and three earned runs, but the Royals bullpen blew yet another lead. Jeremy Jeffress gave up a walk-off walk to Tigers catcher Alex Avila to end the game.

Mitch Maier was 2-4 with a RBI double for the Royals. Alicdes Escobar and Melky Cabrera also chipped in with two hits each.

Max Scherzer allowed only one earned run (three runs total) in a no-decision effort for Detroit. Jose Valverde picked up the win in relief.

Kansas City dropped its season record to 2-5 with the loss.
