Yes, in my opinion, that is the ideal way to do it. Actually, I sometimes go further. When I was starting out watching baseball, there were about 60 years of modern baseball history, so that is what seems normal to me. So I start 80 years before my target date, wipe out history after 20 years, then let 60 years of history accumulate... But even a few years will do for most people.

One reminder, though, be sure to set up so that salary, strategy, etc. is going to be normal for your target start year. You probably don't want 70s salaries in your 2000 league when you take over.
