2024 Ruthlandian Final 4 Series
SV Slams Valmara 11-3, Wins 3rd Straight
It's been a couple of long decades since Sugar Valley has been in the Pro Cup Finals... 2004 was its only appearance and they lost to Red Bluff in five games... the Rattlers took a big step toward returning with its third straight victory over the Valmara Vipers... Sugar Valley belted five pitchers for 16 hits in an 11-3 runaway at home in Farmers Memorial Park... they kicked off the game with 8 runs in the first frame... the Rattlers had four players with 3 hits each: CF Johnny Drake (.219), 2B Jan Kessinger (.314), LF Marty Beckett (.300) and C Silvio Salas (.286)... Salas and Beckett both had 2 doubles and 1B Dean Woods (.219) had a homer... Salas, Kessinger and SS Jack Sanderson (.194) drove in 2 runs apiece.
The win was costly... starter Harry Diefendorf suffered a back injury and could miss the remainder of the playoffs... Diefenforf worked a strong 4 and two-thirds innings, allowing only one run and 3 hits with 6 strikeouts... Milt Baker (1-0 7.72) staggered through the sixth, giving up 2 runs and 3 hits in 1-plus innings, but got the win... then Johnny Kingsberry came in and saved it for him and was brilliant, retiring all 9 men he faced, striking out 3 of them... Kingsberry will replace the injured Diefendorf in the starting rotation for Sugar Valley... Valmara only got 6 hits... one was a homer by 2B Ron Freiberg (.250)... Johnny Vasylenko (0-3 6.75) was the victim of the first-inning fiasco and got the loss.
2024 Tycobbian Final 4 Series
Blue Jays Thump Rascals 5-2 Behind Starr
In White River Stadium, Tuckanarra's terrific tandem of Quinn Starr and closer Archie Desmond put down the Rascals 5-2 to go up two games to one in the Tycobbian Final 4... Starr (3-0 2.35) went 8 fine innings for the win, permitting only 2 runs and 8 hits with 6 Ks and no walks... Desmond (1.50) posted his 3rd postseason save with a runless ninth... Tuckanarra got to starter Jon French (2-1 3.13) for a quick 3 runs in the second, although French deserved a better fate... the Rascals piled up 5 errors and gave up 4 gift runs... French surrendered 5 runs on 5 hits in 8 innings... the Blue Jays offense was led by RF Danny Redd (.313), CF Jim Garrison (.414), and C Coco D'Abadie (.160), all with one run batted in.
