From there you have a couple of metrics (games played and plate appearances for position players) that you can base the vesting option on.

If the player reaches the goal set in his vesting option, his contract is guaranteed for the next season. If he misses the goal, his contract is voided and you have the option to renegotiate like you would with any other upcoming FA.
