Here is my general strategy:
1) Assemble a good lineup and pitching staff
2) Assemble a good minor league system
3) Win division
4) Win League Divisional Series
5) Win League Championship Series
6) Win World Series
6) Sign free agents in off-season to fill holes
7) Draft good players
Cycle repeats every year.
*If needed trades should be made during the year to continue cycle.
