Hi Everyone:
I was wondering if anyone around here might have an inside line on getting in touch with sports writers at the major newspapers and magazines. In particular, the folks on this list:
Baseball Writers Association of America - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I know, it's a crazy longshot, but in my role as PR/marketing guy, I'm trying to do whatever I can. This past Sunday, I went through all the SB Nation blogs linked to from MLB on Yahoo and hit up as many bloggers as I could. I also hit up the sports writers at a bunch of newspapers; some of them are on the BWAA list.
It wound up being close to 300 people total, and so far about 4 or 5 have responded, all of them bloggers. The email let people know about OOTP 12 and iOOTP and gave some basics. I didn't want to inundate them with info, but I wanted to let them know who we are and what we do. I also noted that the games are popular with people who play fantasy baseball or are just stats-heads in general.
Maybe I'll actually get a response from some newspaper folks, but I thought I'd see if anyone around here has a personal connection.
I also need help connecting with some of the bigger video game sites, particularly Gamespot, Gamespy/IGN, etc. Last month, I went through LinkedIn and sent messages to editors at those sites, but didn't have much luck there either. Since I have done work in videogames in the past, many of those people were 2nd or 3rd degree away from me, which let me see their info and send them messages.
And I have a spreadsheet of the publications included in Metacritic, which I need to go through as well. We've just barely qualified for Metacritic the last couple years, so it would be nice to get more coverage at general gaming sites too.
I don't think we're sexy enough for the general gaming sites, which is why they don't cover us a lot, but I'd still like to give it the ol' college try. Personally, I think if we're going to increase awareness of OOTP, it's going to be through baseball and general sports sites, but I want to hit all avenues.
If anyone is up for helping me do some digging, I can put the Metacritic spreadsheet on Google docs and divvy up the sites.
Thanks.
