ANSON CALLS IT QUITS
The last of the originals is gone. Cap Anson who was the last remaining player from the inagural 1871 season officially retired from the game of baseball at 45 years old and 24 years of service.
Anson was a pillar of consistency ending his career with a .313 average and a record 3088 base hits. Anson won one MVP award in 1884 but was always considered among the best hitters in the game throughout his long career.
"I played as long as I could, and then some." said Anson after his team dropped the 1897 World Series. "I want to thank this franchise, the fans, and everyone I played with through the years."
