WALK OFF THEME ON OPENING DAY

Friday April 9

At Safeco Field
Oakland………………..2
Seattle………………….1
WP: Randy Johnson (1-0)
LP: Lefty Grove (0-1)
HR: Jimmie Foxx (1), Alex Rodriguez (1)

A perfect opening day in Seattle as Lefty Grove and Randy Johnson battled until the last inning. In the bottom of the 9th Alex Rodriguez hit a Grove fast ball 451 feet to left for a walk off winner.

Player of the game: Randy Johnson (9 IP, 6 K, 2 BB)

At PNC Park
Washington…………1
Pittsburgh…………...5
WP: Babe Adams (1-0)
LP: Walter Johnson (0-1)
HR: Joe Cronin (1)

Dave Parker doubles in two in a four run fourth inning and ends with three RBI as the Pirates hit Walter Johnson pretty good to take the opener. Babe lace>Adamslace> allowed only a Joe Cronin home run and was in control all evening.

Player of the game: Babe Adams (9 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 5 H, 1 BB)

At Yankee Stadium
Minnesota………….3
NY Yankees……….4
WP: Whitey Ford (1-0)
LP: Johan Santana (0-1)
HR: Chilli Davis (1), Dave Winfield (1)

An amazing game at Yankee Stadium to open the season. Johan Santana had the Yankees inept all evening long with great stuff on the mound. Down two runs in the 9th Tom Kelly stayed with Santana and with two out and two on up came Dave Winfield. Winfield who has been critized by some for being on this roster hit long fly ball that just cleared the wall in left for a dramatic walk off dinger. A perfect start to the Yankee season.>>

Player of the game: Whitey Ford (9 IP, 3 ER, 10 K, 1 BB)

At Busch Stadium
NY Mets……………2
St. Louis……………10
WP: Bob Gibson (1-0)
LP: Tom Seaver (0-1)

Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, and Joe Medwick each drove in two runs as the Cardinals won behind Bob Gibson who went all 9 innings and was in control. Tom Seaver had the toughest start of all allowing 10 earned runs in his first start and never looking right on the mound. A six run 8th inning put the game away.

Player of the game: Bob Gibson (9 IP, 2 ER, 12 K, 1 BB)

At FenwayPark
LA Angels…………..5
Boston………………6 (11 inn)
WP: Jonathan Paplebon (1-0)
LP: Frank Tanana (0-1)
HR: Tris Speaker (1), Bob Boone (1)

Another great opening day game and the hero was Nomar Garciaparra. Twice Nomar came through in a big way, first in the 9th with two out he singled to tie the game and send it into extra innings where in the 11th again with two outs the short stop singled to right to drive in the walk off winner. Frank Tanana pitched very well but the Red Sox kept fighting and took a dramatic one.

At AT&T Park
Philadephia…………2
San Francisco……….1
WP: Pete Alexander (1-0)
LP: Christy Matthewson (0-1)
HR: Greg Luzinksi (1)

As expected a great pitcher’s duel at the Bay but Grover Aleander kept his poise and spoiled opening day. Greg Luzinski hit the go ahead home run in the 5th inning of of Chrsty Matthewson and that is all the support the Phillie ace needed as he went the distance and struck out 8 including Willie Mays twice.

Player of the game: Pete Alexander (9 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 3 BB)

At Camden Yards
Texas……………..6
Baltimore…………8
WP: Jim Palmer (1-0)
LP: Nolan Ryan (0-1)
HR: Mark Teixeira (1)

Davey Johnson broke a tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two run single that would hold up for the Baltimore Orioles and their opening day win. Both Nolan Ryan and Jim Palmer were not at their best but the Orioles kept answering the call never having trailed in this game.

Player of the game: Craig Biggio (3-5 2 RBI 2B)

At Dodger Stadium
Milwaukee…………2
LA Dodgers………..4
WP: Sandy Koufax (1-0)
LP: Don Sutton (0-1)

A typical win for the Dodgers doing it just the way they expect to. Sandy Koufax the winner as he kept the Brewers hitless until the 5th inning and never looked out of control. No big innings in this game, the Dodgers did crack out 11 hits.

Player of the game: Sandy Koufax (9IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6K)

At Rogers Center
Detroit…………….6
Toronto……………7 (10 inn)
WP: Tom Henke (1-0)
LP: Willie Hernandez (0-1)
HR: Kirk Gibson (1), Carlos Delgado (1), John Olerud (1)

Yet another walk off win on opening day as the Blue Jays turned to their bench and John Olerud who hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 10th as a pinch hitter off Willie Hernandez to win this game. Ty Cobb had tied the game with 2 out in the 9th with an RBI single as the runs were flowing at Rogers Center. Kirk Gibson was all over the field in this game.

Player of the game: Kirk Gibson (2-4, 3 R, RBI, HR, SB)

At Turner Field
Cincinnati………….7
Atlanta……………..5
WP: Eppa Rixey (1-0)
LP: Greg Maddux (0-1)
S: Rob Dibble (1)
HR: Eddie Matthews (1)

Johnny Bench went 4-5 and the Cincinnati Reds were less then dominated by Braves starter Greg Maddux. The Reds gave up a five run lead but scored two in the late innings to never trail. Eddie Matthews sent 3-3 and drove in four for the Braves in the losing effort.

Player of the game: Eddie Matthews (3-3, HR, 4 RBI, R)

At Comiskey Park
Cleveland…………….3
Chicago White Sox…..2
WP: Bob Feller (1-0)
LP: Ed Walsh (0-1)
HR: Manny Ramirez (1)

A good pitchers duel for openers in Chicago. Bob Feller allowed two runs but went the distance and pitched out of some tight spots to close out the Sox. Lou Boudreau went 3-3 and Manny Ramirez went deep to account for the Indians runs.

Player of the game: Bob Feller (9 IP, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K)

At Wrigley Field
Kanasas City………….1
Chicago Cubs………..5
WP: Fergie Jenkins
LP: Brett Saberhagen
HR: Hack Wilson (1)

Sammy Sosa doubled in a run in the first inning while Hack Wilson hit a two run home run as the Cubs got off on the right foot. Fergie Jenkins kept the Royals under wraps including holding George Brett hitless. Sosa ended with two doubles and three hits.

Player of the game: Fergie Jenkins (9 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 2BB, 5 H)
