I don't have any actual experience with Strat-O-Matic, but from what I've gathered, I think it is similar to Diamond Mind in that you basically just play out seasons. You have the ability to make trades and what not. But if you don't have other human managers you are playing against, things like trades are pretty much empty.

One exciting element OOTP 11/12 adds is the ability to negotiate with players in a manner which seems almost real at times. Also, coaches and scouts can be hired/fired. Players and personnel have individual personalities in OOTP. Also, OOTP provides the challenge of balancing the financial end of the game which I find one of the most rewarding aspects. To win is one thing, to win and make a profit is quite another. Anyway, I think those are some things DMB and Strat-O-Matic do not provide. I played DMB for several years, then Baseball Mogul, but once I found OOTP, I never looked back.

Overall, I think OOTP is a very full experience that offers many many options and many many different ways for users to play the simulation. If you are only interested in accurately recreating past history and the related stats, I would recommend DMB (but be prepared to pay for all of history). If you are looking for a fun imersive game, OOTP wins hands down.
