OOTP isn't a strict replay like the other games. Out of the box, without any season disks to purchase, it lets you play any year in MLB history. It does a good job at providing believable outcomes. The league totals are generally good. Most individuals perform in a believable manner. It also lets you play against the AI and have continuity from 1 year to the next. The AI is sometimes boneheaded both from a GM standpoint or with the in game decisions, but the game is still fun. You don't need to spend $1000 to play the seasons, so that is a plus.
