1934 MVP Voting

I just came across this at the wonderful baseball-reference.com:

http://baseball-reference.com/awards...34.shtml#ALmvp

Does anyone have a clue why Gehrig was only fifth? Cochrane was a catcher but his team didn't win the World Series. Did baseball writers have easier access to crack that year?

Gehrig won the Triple Crown, posted an 1.172 OPS, and gets fifth in the voting. Weird.
