I tried enabling Rule 5 for a couple of virtual years in my OOTP11 league, but I ended up disabling it again because the AI did a poor job of managing the players it drafted. I didn't try optioning/DFAing any players I drafted (although I did trade one of them - I think I just released the other).

But I remember the Detroit Tigers in the early 80s drafted four subpar firstbasemen in the Rule 5 draft. They proceeded to waive/DFA guys like Lance Parrish and Alan Trammell to keep these scrub firstbasemen (who weren't even playing in games) in order to keep them on the roster. Then, to make matters worse, at some point in July, they finally DFAed the Rule 5 scrubs and sent them to the minors, which they shouldn't have been able to do. Why not just release them back in April or May?

Needless to say I became commish and intervened to "fix" the Tigers, and I disabled the Rule 5 draft. Haven't gone back since, so I hope OOTP 12 has improvements in this area. Once I convert I'll probably re-enable it for at least one season to see how it goes.
