Riverfront Stadium - Mario Soto was determined to finish things off for the Reds in another epic pitching duel between the Dominican pitcher and Dave Drevecky. Both pitchers pitched perfect shutouts as the game went into the 11th inning scoreless.

In the 11th Gary Templeton doubled into the gap scoring two runs and looking as if the Reds had blown the quality start by Soto. On a number of occasions Soto fought off Sparkey Anderson who wanted to relieve him.

In the bottom of the frame with Trevor Hoffman on thr mound the Reds came back to everyone's suprize. With two out and the tying runs on Eric Davos hit a grounder to Bip Roberts at third and the infielder let the ball go stright through his legs and bound into the corner scoring the tying two runs.

With the game tied Mario Soto finally was pulled in the 13th inning having pitched 154 balls! Rob Dibble came on and in the 14th a Dave Winfield double turned into a run as Jack Clark got him home on a sac fly. Scott Linebrink closed out the ninth as no other Reds comback could be mustered.
