Seriously, try deleting the messages.dat file after you exit the game. Restart the game and the messages.dat file will be rebuilt. You may/will lose all current e-mails and news items. Backup the entire league before doing anything like this.
As a side note and optional on your part. I would physically delete all messages in the messages folder before deleting messages.dat. It will reduce your save game folder size. Backup the entire league before doing this. Once you confirm that everything works fine, delete the backup.
