The Base-Ball Season

New York Times
Buffalo, N.Y., December 2, 1879

The League Base-Ball Association met again to-day. The session was held with closed doors. The League awarded the 1879 Championship Pennant to the Chicago Club. A committee was appointed to prepare the schedule for 1880. The same ball that was used last season was adopted. It was concluded to continue the present price of admission. The playing rules were changed. Eight balls instead of ten will be called hereafter. The catcher will be compelled to catch the ball on the fly, the bound between abolished. If the side at the bat in the ninth inning secures the winning run, the game is to be called without putting out three men, as heretofore.

The league nines:
  • Boston Red Caps
  • Buffalo Bisons
  • Chicago White Stockings
  • Cincinnati Red Stockings
  • Cleveland Blues
  • Providence Grays
  • Syracuse Stars
  • Worcester Ruby Legs

The members of each of these nines are in splendid condition. It is the general opinion that the club which carries off the honors this year will be obliged to do the hardest work that has ever been done in the ball-field in a single season. The playing this year will commence May 1, at Cincinnati, between the Chicago and Cincinnati clubs.
