Miller Park - a game that will be remembered for a logn time in Milwaukee between the mighty Yankees and the Brewers. White Ford is the most unlucky man in baseball as he didnt allow a hit in over 10 innings but still came up the loser.
Ford and Brewer starter Teddy Higuera matched eachother pitch for pitch in this and it was difficult to decifer who was better. Higuera did it against the most dangerous lineup in the Cooperstown league holding them to only two hits and going the full eleven innings.
"We just couldnt get solid contact on him" said Derek Jeter who got one of the two Yankee hits.
Ford on the other hand was evev better. Ford kept the Brewers at bay and did not allow a hit but waited for his offense to give hime something; anything. Ford couldnt beleive his luck as he entered the 11th inning still with a no hitter but not a winner. Tired and frustrated Ford did have trouble with his control all afternoon. In the 11th Ford walked Paul Molitor and with two men on and two out John McGraw decided to go to the bullpen and Mariano Rivera.
Cecil Cooper came to the plate and on the second pitch he saw from Rivera blasted the ball 435 feet to right center and over the wall. The only hit of the game for the Brewers and it was the most dramatic anyone could have imagined.
"This was an incredibe game" said Cooper after he was mobbed upon beating the mighty Yankees, "I know its only one game in April but we feel like we did something enormous today."
This is what the Cooperstown Leage is all about.
Around the league today
Hrbek stays on a tear
Kent Hrbek of the Minnesota Twins remains a suprize as one of the hottest hitters in the league. Hrbek went 4-4 against the Astros today hitting two home runs and driving in six runs.
The big Twins first baseman is batting .412 with 3 home runs and a league leading 15 RBI. Hrbek isnt exactly a household name but has shown his ability to get the big hits and help his team get off to the best start in baseball at 7-1.
Cansesco Slam Carries A's
Jose Cansesco hit a long grand slam in the bottom of the 11th against Jonathan Papelbon to carry the Athletics ove the struggling Red Sox.
Lefty Grove and Roger Clemens had a good pitching duel and the game stayed tense to the final atbat. Ted Williams had hit his second home run of the season to tie the game but it was Cansesco who made his first home run this year a special one.
The Red Sox are 1-4 on the young season.
Trouble in Chicago
The Chicago White Sox heard the boo's at Comiksey Park tonight as the Kansas City Royals came into town and dismantled them. The Royals slammed 18 hits and won 15-1 against Ed Walsh and the Sox.
The White Sox and Tony LaRussa are 2-7 and many are wondering if the Sox are buying into the skipper's mentality.
George Brett drove in 5 runs and went 3-5, Brett is batting .344 on the young season. The Royals are 6-2 thus far and have opened some eyes. Dennis Leonard got his first start and first win of the season.
