Wehmeier and Litwhiler combine To End Braves Streak At 22
Cincinnati- In a season that has been full of nothing but bad news, Cincinnati Reds fans finally got something to cheer about today, when their club did what no other team has been able to do since May 28th, beat the Boston Braves.
Facing the first place Braves in an afternoon doubleheader, the Reds were pounded in the opener 10-4, thanks to a 7 run Braves 6th inning that was capped off by an Earl Torgeson grand slam off of struggling Reds hurler Ewell Blackwell.
In game two however, a Danny Litwhiler two run homer in the third off of Braves ace Warren Spahn gave the Reds a 2-0 lead that starting pitcher Herm Wehmeier refused to relinquish, battling his way through 8 and a third innings, allowing just one run despite 13 hits and 2 walks, he also fanned 6 batters. Totally gassed, Wehmeier was replaced by relief ace Harry Gumpert, who needed just 12 pitches to get the final two outs and lock down the Reds stunning 2-1 win.
