Boston, Massachusetts is called "The Hub" because it is considered the center of activity up here in New England, and Massachusetts is commonly known as the center of New England.

(I had to look it up myself.)

As far as sports is concerned, Boston, or very close by, has a franchise in all of the major sports.

Baseball: Boston Red Sox
Basketball: Boston Celtics
Hockey: Boston Bruins
Football: New England Patriots (Foxboro, Massachusetts is not far from Boston and Boston was the origional location of the team when it was in the old AFL).

It is 3rd in size in the northeast with New York City being the largest followed by Philadelphia, then Boston.
