Yep, I would pick some guys like this, stars that just didn't have the staying power to get HOF career numbers. Bret Saberhagen is another example.
Another way to think is to find all-star players from bad teams - these types usually didn't garner enough attention to get in the HOF. Blyleven and Tommy John kind of apply here.
If I were doing this, I'd find the best three players in the history of my favorite team not in the HOF. Might be hard if you like Yankees, but otherwise there are plenty of choices.
