Anson Gets 1,500
Orlando first baseman joins 1,500-hit club
SAN ANTONIO -- Orlando Orcas first baseman Cap Anson became the sixth player in Pastime Baseball League history to amass 1,500 hits in his career tonight, stroking a 7th inning single off San Antonio's Pete Falcone in an eventual 12-7 Orlando victory.
The career .301 hitter, 32 years old, has seen his power numbers decline a bit in recent years but remains a steady offensive force.
The six-time All-Star started off slowly, but has hit .307 over his last 51 games. With his team 12-games out, Anson is just hoping to lay the groundwork for a team of youngsters including Jimmy Wynn, Chino Smith, Jerry Remy and Leon Durham, to progress in the coming years and get back to playoff contention.
"I've seen a lot in this game," Anson said. "There's plenty left for me, but I need to share what I know, too."
"Cap's been a great help," said teammate Rocco Baldelli, who has had the best two seasons of his career since coming to Orlando before last season. "He's an absolute pro."
