Idols Lose Summers
Pitcher done for season as L.A. chases Arizona

LOS ANGELES -- Already down a starter with Ricky Nolasco on the shelf, the defending champion Los Angeles Idols suffered another blow today when Ed Summers was shut down with a torn elbow ligament that will require surgery.

The 27-year-old righty hasn't pitched to his 18-win form of last season, but still was a vital cog in the L.A. rotation. This season, Summers went 11-11 with a 4.79 ERA, a number blow up by a recent 10-start stretch in which he posted a 6.45 ERA.

The Idols signed free agent Dave Freisleben, let go by Orlando earlier this season despite going 3-0 for them with a 1.52 ERA in three starts, a move that confused many.

Freisleben won't have to be brilliant, just steady. Los Angeles boasts the league's best offense and a strong bullpen of Tom Niedenfeur, Jonathan Papelbon, Billy McCool and Brian Fuentes, that has posted a 3.08 collective ERA this season, 2nd best in the Southern League.

Los Angeles currently trails the division-leading Arizona Sandmen by 4 games. The teams meet for a three-game set this weekend in Phoenix. Freisleben is slated to start Friday night.
