Last Sunday my 9 year old German Shepherd woke up happy and playful as always ... she ran around with my 3 year old Jack Russell, played outside for a while, barked at the neighbors, "helped" Kelly clean the house like she does every Sunday. Around noon she laid down in the kitchen and started acting like her hips hurt. This is somewhat normal as she had days where she didn't want to do anything.
Around 4:30 or so she started breathing real weird almost like she was hot ... we tried getting her up to get water or food and she wouldn't budge. Kelly started calling around to find the nearest Animal Hospital and I rolled her over onto her side to get her more comfortable. At this point she started gasping so I picked her 110 lbs up and took her to the car. As we backed out of the driveway we called the Hospital and told them to be ready because Cammie was having problems breathing. The Hospital was 20 minutes away, Kelly climbed in back with her and within 5 minutes she was gone.
I've had to put animals down before because of illness but have never had one die so suddenly. She went from happy and playful to grave condition inside of 5 hours. The vet thinks she may of had a tumor that burst or possibly a heart attack but we didn't pay the costs for an autopsy.
We got her 3 months after we got married and neither of us have handled it well this week. We got her ashes back on Friday and bringing her home felt better.
Thanks to those who have passed along their condolences. The suddenness of it really shook me up.

Sorry to hear about this, Mike.

I've had a number of dogs in my life and it's never easy to say goodbye to them.
