Terry Fox starts his "Marathan of Hope" run. Terry Fox was a young man born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1977 he felt pain in his knee, and when treated at hospital discovered it was osteosarcoma, a form of cancer that often starts at the knee, then spreads into the muscles and tendons. At the time the only way to treat the cancer was to amputate the leg just above the knee. In April 1980 he decided to raise money for cancer research by running across Canada from St. John's Newfoundland to Vancouver Island, hoping to raise awareness, and bring in $1 million for cancer research. He began by dipping his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean, and filling two bottles with water from the ocean, when he reached the Pacific Ocean he would pour one bottle of the Atlantic waters into the Pacific, and keep the other as a souvenir, and dip his leg in the Pacific. This marathon, however, would not be a straight line across Canada, but would attempt to hit as many populated areas as possible.
