The
2012 Planetary Extreme Championship between the Manchester Maulers and the Tempe Knights has begun, and
as you can see, Manchester has taken an early 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Later this week, the PEBA's sixth season will come to a close, and whether it's the Maulers or the Knights who take home the Rodriguez Cup, it's a guarantee that we'll have our sixth first-time champion. This is a league featuring extremely perceptive, extremely active owners, and that leads to a great deal of natural parity.
Probably most exciting is that Manchester and Tempe are both small-market teams (Tempe has far and away the smallest market in the PEBA), and both are franchises that climbed through incredible early adversity to reach this stage. It's a testament to the acumen and sticktoitiveness of Jeff of Manchester and Chris of Tempe that they've positioned their teams on the precipice of victory. Both are franchise-founding owners, and where others would have given up in despair, they found a way to rise above their circumstances. In a few days, one of them will be rewarded with the ultimate prize; the right to call themselves Planetary Extreme Champions.
