2014 IPA Elite 8 Series
Hodge Stops Colfax, Marston Evens Series
The Marston Nine evened up the RU Elite 8 Series with a 5-2 triumph over the Colfax Blasters. The two clubs have now split the first two games of the best-of-seven series. Zippy Hodge (1-0) went the route scattering 9 hits for the victory, while Jimmy Joe Cartner (0-1) suffered the loss. Marston tagged him for 10 hits and 5 runs. The Nine were sparked by LF James Yardley with a double and a homer and 3 RBIs and CF Russ Woodward, who also went deep and had 2 hits. Leading by a 3-2 score, Marston put the game out of reach with two more runs in the seventh. C Joe Alexander paced Colfax with a solo home run and 3B Mike Janocko cracked 3 hits.
BB Sunbirds Stun FM 8-3 In Game 2
The Belair Beach Sunbirds apparently don't read the sports pages. Manager Marty Pedroza's team wasn't given much of a chance against defending IPA Pro Cup champion Far Mountain by the pollsters. However, for the second day in a row they have put away the Redhawks. This time the Sunbirds stunned them 8-3 and sent Robby Kelly down to defeat. Belair Beach racked up 14 hits and smacked 2 home runs in the rout. Kelly (0-1) was KO'd in the seventh after giving up 7 runs and 11 hits, only 3 of them were earned. Kelly exited on the losing end of a 7-1 score. Nasty Naymick (1-0) garnered the win as he held Far Mountain to 3 runs and 8 hits. Naymick had 5 Ks and walked 2. RF Billy Martz and C Little Jake Bungarooba led the onslaught with 3 hits each. Both of them had homers. Martz drove in 3 runs and Bungarooba had 2 RBIs.
Turon Tames Hellcats 6-3, Up By 2 Games
Playing like a team on a mission, the Turon Typhoons tamed Hartsdale 6-3 to go up 2-0 in the best-of-seven TU Elite 8 Series. The Typhoons pounded out 13 hits, led by LF Raphael Semmes with 4 for 4 and 2 runs and RF Andy Porter with 3 for 4 and 3 runs scored. Semmes had 2 triples, a double and a single, while Porter homered and had 2 singles. SS Roy Flanagan had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Winning pitcher James Stuart (1-0) tossed 8 solid innings, yielding just 3 runs and 7 hits. Merle Studebaker worked a scoreless ninth for his second save. Tony Lane (0-1) caught the loss as he was tagged for all 13 hits and all 6 runs in 7 innings. SS Jud Turchin put Hartsdale up 3-2 in the fifth, but Turon rallied in the last 3 innings.
Wildcats Whack Wolves 7-3, Series Tied
The Kenwood Wildcats bombed Midway 7-3 to tie up the Elite 8 Series at a game apiece. The Wildcats cracked 14 hits, led by homers by CF Dennis Riley and SS Bob Snyder. Snyder's sealed the win with a 3-run blast in the ninth to up the Kenwood lead to 4 runs. Connie Gavagan notched the victory. He went into the fifth, allowed 5 hits and 3 runs. Gavagan led 4-3 when he departed. Relievers Tank Tucker, Rick Brickell and Glenn Stewart held Midway to just one hit and no runs over the last 4 innings. The loser was Sherm Jarvis (0-1), who was shelled for 10 hits and 4 runs in 7 innings. LF Dylan Stevenson had a two-run homer in defeat.
