Reds Even Things Up

Crosley Field - Paul Derringer knew the importance of this game and wasnt about to let his team lose another one at home as his effort mostly allowed the 40 Reds to beat the 01 Mariners by a final of 5-3.

Derringer had the pressure to perform against a team and lineup that looked so strong in the opening game of the series. Derringer was as sharp as Freddy Garcia was for Seattle in game one and didnt allow an earned run until his departure in the 9th. Jaimie Moyer wasnt exactly having a bad game on the other side of the dugout as he went a full seven innings and left the game down by two runs and hoping for his team to rally for him. The rally would indeed come but not before the homse side would score some more.

Ernie Lombardi drove in the first run of the day for the Reds in the third inning and Johnny Rizzo homered in the 4th off Moyer to extend the lead. The game and score remained this way until the 8th when the Reds scratched for more. Norm Charlton and Ryan Franklin didnt have much in the inning and three hits along with an error produced three more runs and the Reds five run lead looked like ten to most at the ballpark.

Seattle showed some life in the 9th after Derringer left the game. Mike Cameron doubled in two runs and with two men on and two out there was legitimate hope the Mariners could really rally. Dan Wilson however grounded out to short and the series was even heading to Seattle. It is a best of three series now and the enviorment in loud Safeco Field is sure to be a factor.
