In my Eastern League I have seen both the case you had (although not as amazing) and the reverse. In 1910 I signed a 15 year old C from Lithuania who became my backup C from 1914-1921 and could have been a 1000-1200 hit player if I was not so stubborn to keep him. He played 9 more seasons after I let him go and was a starter/every other day C for the rest of his career.
Another team signed an OF named Fabrice Antoine from France in 1936 and his potential was 100-27-77 (CON-POW-EYE) and was at one point the #44 prospect in the league. He ended up flaming out and had 16 hits in 26 games in his 2-season career.
