EAST
Alabama 5, St. Louis 2: The Tides can't clinch on their own as Eppa Rixey (8-10, 3.44) hurls a complete game 4-hitter to keep the champagne corked. Sammy Strang had three hits including a 3-run homer, and 4 RBI.
Memphis 4, Orlando 2: The Strummers won't pack it in yet. Down 2-0 in the top of the 8th, they score four runs to hand Denny McLain his 20th loss of the season. Bobby Murcer hit a 2-run single in the rally, and John Lackey won his 15th with 8 solid innings. If the Tides win tomorrow in the series finale, they have a shot at tying for the division if they can sweep St. Louis to wrap up the season.
