Indianapolis 7, Chicago 2: It's been a rough go for Denny LeMaster, who falls to 8-16 and is 2-7 since August 1. Chicago leaves 12 on base as a team, with the heart of Ruth, Jones and Connor leaving 4, 5 and 5, respectively. Stan Musial had three hits, including a homer, for the Engines.

Sacramento 3, Milwaukee 2: Rube Marquard wins number 18 as the Stingers take over first place, outdueling John Montefusco, who was strong over 7 1/3. Whitey Lockman drove in a pair for Sacramento. Jonny Gomes, who led the league in homers at the all-star break, hit only his second since then for Milwaukee's runs.

New York 5, Wichita 2: The Heroes hung a four-spot on Jay Hughes in the first and Harry Krause went 8 strong to win his 16th for New York. Dick Radatz earned his 21st save.
