I'm seeing the same thing. Did you patch to .15 and then to .17? I'm wondering if the menu issue exists if you patch directly to .17 and skip .15.
Regardless, I shouldn't have to do any sort of work around to get the menu back - especially if it involves creating new pictures for players I've been following in a league originally created using OOTP 2006. Surely this is something that should be automatically fixed by a patch.
