Wiedman Out For Season
Everyone knew there was a problem for some time now but most in the Chicago camp were just hoping that it wasnt so. But an injury, and a serious one at that, to starter Stump Wiedman and his arm should come to no suprise to no one. The 25 year old right hander who has won 89 games in his career finally could pitch no more and suffered a torn elbow ligament in his throwing arm. The injury is of course very damaging and Wirdman will be out for close to a full calander year; some are even questioning if the young man will pitch again, or have the velocity he once had back; doctors remain cautiously optimistic.
"Right now you just feel bad for the kid" said Ned Williamson who has played with Wiedman all of his career and is a close friend, "he feels like he has let the team down but he has not, its just one of those things, one of those bad breaks."
The more immediate impact is that the team is now permanatly down another arm. Cy Bentley has impressed everyone and proven that he still can win at his age as he reaches now for over 320 career wins. Bentley in the rotation now full time has gone 6-4 with a 1.73 ERA in 11 starts, where is the rust??
With all the holes the team has kept it together and remains three games over .500 and still all to play for after a 17-11 month. King Kelly is carrying the team bats very well having driven in 36 runs so far, while Cap Anson is starting to come around a bit bringing his average up to .244 having batted .286 in May.

League NotesIn what is becoming a very common injury these days, George Gore of the Cincinnati Reds will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his labrum in his shoulder this month. Piano Legs Gore is still among the best hitters in the game with a .299 lifetime average.
Dan Brouthers of the Brooklyn Grays is also spending some time on the shelf. Brouthers who is likely the biggest star in the game has a bad ankle problem and will miss most of June. The Grays are in the race to repeat 3 games back of the Pittsburgh club.
John Reilly is now the alltime leader in stolen bases. Reilly stole his 377th bag of his career, passing Tom Barlow of Pittsburgh for the alltime lead.
