looking at the stills and the video posted. in the video the guy is out by 3 feet, in the stills from left field the runner is about at the bag and the ball is just in the tip of the glove. you could make an arguement that the guy is shortarming the catch, and in the video, from the back it looks like he is having trouble controling the catch.
what i could use is a good centerfield TV shot.

I was just watching the replay again on sportscenter. It did from one angle look like the ball went deep into the mit, then kind of squirted to the tip of the glove.
That could have been what the ump saw.
