Chicago and Brooklyn In Staring Match

The Chicago White Stockings and Brooklyn Atlantics are waiting to see who will blink first as both teams battle at the top of the National League after 2 months of the season. The diffrence between the sides is a single game and neither lookis like it is slowing down.



The Whites are keeping pace with the staff led by George Derby who has already won 12 games. Stump Wiedman and young Adonis Terry both have ERA's under 2 and 8 wins a piece. The young Adonis has rebounded well to have a good May. The bats are leading the league in hitting and hits. Ned Williamson continues to grow in power as the poweful third baseman has 8 home runs already, surely setting a team record, Williamson has also driven in 30 runs. With Freddy Dunlap struggling with a career low .238 average, the other players have done well to pick up the slack.




The Atlantics look to be in the 1882 form and are staying close with the Whites despite many feeling the Chicago team is much better. Dan Brouthers is the star of this team and the league but late this month Brooklyn recieved the worst of news as Brouthers broke his kneecap and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Brooklyn insists they can stay in the race, and with Tim Keefe on the mound who could really argue, the star ace has won 17 games already this year.

League Tidbits

• Bob Barr of the Boston Beaneaters threw the third no hitter in league history to the delight of the Boston faithful. Bar struck out 6 as t Boston whitewashed the St. Louis Browns and watched Barr make history in the process.

• Charlie Geggus of the Washington Nationals had an incredible month culminating in a league record 16 strikeout performance against the Chicago White Sox on May 14th. Geggus then saw it all fall apart as the 22 year old was shelved for the season after a shoulder problem shut him down. Geggus was on an incredible pace 264 batters in 189 innings.

• The Cleveland Blues and Chicago White Sox made a deal during this past month. The Blues send Joe Farrell to the Sox in exchange for 25 year old outfielder Joe Mansell. Both players hope to have bright futures in their new soroundings.
