13th World Series

Reds Win First World Title

The Cincinnati Reds for the first time in their history are the lone champions of professional baseball. The Reds had all the best against the Baltimore Orioles, who were playing with a heavy heart, to take the series in five games. The Orioles were obviously an exhausted team after the passing last month of their owner, and it showed in such a tough series.

The Reds finally celebrate after 13 years of a roller coaster that at times saw chronic losing and some very serious financial issues. The turn around the franchise has made especially in the last 5 years to reach the pinnacle of sport has to really make this day a special one.

Stars like Larry Corcoran and George Gore paraded through the city parade and were proud of their acomplishment.

"This is why we struggle and stick with it when things are going bad" said Corcoran, "because it is all the more sweeter now."

A recap of the series:

The Orioles take the opening game of the series on the road as the Reds opened the series with some nerves. John Morrill hit a two run home run, even though he had hit none all season, to open up a nice margn for Jimbo McCinnis. The Reds ralllied in the 9th with two runs and had the tying run on third and the winning run at second with two out. But Oyster Burns grounded out to second and the Orioles escaped with the win.

Game 2

Cincinnati Red Stockings21100001X581

WP: Jack Lynch
LP: John Schappert

The Reds score in the first three innings off John Schappert and take a 4-0 lead. Fref Pfeffer drove in two runs and the lead would hold up this time as Jack Lynch stayed out of major trouble. This was the big advantage the Reds have, they have two dominant starters in Corcoran and Lynch, where most teams only have one and cant match up. Series even going back to Baltimore.

Game 3

Cincinnati Red Stockings000050100693
Baltimore Orioles000000010156

LP: Jumbo McCinnis

Corcoran this time bounced back and straightened out his game in an emotional day in Baltimore. A five run 5th inning off of MccGinnis was the diffrence. The poor defense in the inning showed the Oriole stress as 4 erros in the inning were critical, 2 of them by catcher Jackie Hayes. Charlie Sweeney hit a long home run later to seal the win ad give the Reds the series lead.

Game 4

S: Pat McManus

The best game of the series. Down by two runs in the bottom of the ninth the Orioles mustered a dramatic rally. With one out John Reilly tripled in a run and was followed by Ed Rowen who singled the tying run home and pulled the loss out of the fire. Still the Reds would not be denied, Tom Brown tripled down the first base line to score Oyster Burns and the lead was again for the visitors. Pat McManus came on and this time despite giving up a single closed the door. A tough loss for the home side that fall behind 3 games to 1, and after the loss the exhaustion on their faces was obvious to all.

Game 5

Baltimore Orioles0010000001312

LP: Tom Healey

The most lopsided game in World Series history as the Reds had little mercy on their opposition as they rampaged to their clinching World Series win. The Orioles committed 12 errors in the loss and couldnt do the most basic of things, it was in some sense sad to watch. George Gore set a World Series record with 6 RBI and 4 other players drove in 2 runs each. Quite a final game for the series.
