The learning curve is long, but rewarding and fun...as you see your creations come to life in the game.

Pouring over the forums here is the best way to get inspiration and ideas on where to start. It is really hard to sum it up because everyone has different abilities, talents and backgrounds when it comes to diving into this stuff.

Set aside an hour or two just to read threads in the mod forum and do searches and read those threads. There's thousands of hidden gems out there.

Its all about combining your own imagination with the tools available....and LOTS of practice.

Some good free programs to explore are inkscape, gimp, and paint.net

Inkscape = free Corel with less power
Gimp & paint.net = free Photoshop with less power

Paint.net is a good starting point cause it can do everything you need as a starter, is very similar in layout to Photoshop...and is not overly complex. Gimp is a bit more robust and complex, but not quite as user friendly or easy to navigate. (not to say its not easy in the hands of somebody who knows their way around)
