Dodgers Pull Of Win In Instant Classic
Sometimes when a series starts or a matchup finally takes shape the actual perfromace on the field doesnt match the hype. In the opening night of this series between the 94 Expos and the 63 Dodgers this theory definately wasnt in effect. Fans and everyone involved enjoyed one of the best played ballgames you could ever see, a 16 inning drama game that only the game of baseball can provide.
Sandy Koufax is dominant anyway you look at him. Still when Marquis Grissom took him deep to open the game before the Dodger fans could settle in, one had to wonder. Grissom waited on a curve ball and made it count with a nice long shot.
Ken Hill knew the challange going in of facing Koufax and took it well. The Dodger did tie the game in the 3rd inning when Willie Davis stole 3rd base and scored on a sharp ground out by Tommy Davis. After the game was tied at three then the fun began.
Koufax and Hill went into high gear throwing inning after inning of strong ball, it seemed as the innings wore on, the hitters got weaker and the pitchers stronger. After 9 innings Hill had had enough and did all he could do, being pulled by Felipe Alou, but Koufax stayed in.
Koufax would go through 10 innings striking out 10 and staying even sharper then anyone thought he would be. The game went to the bullpens but still no team wanted to take the advantage. In fact there were nly three hits total between innings 11 and 15.
In the 16th Tim Scott came on for the Expos. With one out Frank Howard singled and Ron Fairly walked. Gil Heredia came on in relief to get out of the jam. Doug Camili flied out and with 2 down Johnny Roseboro came to the dish.

The Dodgers had done it in their own way, allowing an incredible one run in 16 innings. The game was a classic and even though this was only game 1, it seems like these teams have been playing forever.
"We are hoping this kind of a win affects their minds" said Maury Wills, "Its the kind of game you dont forget."
