Since our team has such a difficult time in the big leagues, which has not been a surprise, we need to take a good hard look at this year's upcoming draft class.

We are very fortunate to be getting the first overall pick in this amateur draft, with Portland getting number two and Washington getting number three and so on.

Before making any decisions, we need to take a good hard look at the future of our organization.

We are most certainly in a 'building' phase of development.

With the first overall pick, some would suggest taking a more 'safe' pick with a college athlete that is closer to making the big league club, others advise in taking the best overall top potential talent that could win you many games in the future. But then again, this would be dilemma's if the top talent wasn't Bryce Harper, who is easily assumed to be our number one overall pick, despite his sign-ability issues.

But let's take a good look at our organizations depth prior to the depth.

Starting Pitcher - Projected rotation for 2013

1. Andrew Cashner
2. Scott Feldman
3. Ryan Perry
4. Collin Baelster
5. Josh Lindblom

Obviously very weak, we really need to find a new potential 'ace' out there.

Relievers
Schlereth, Clippard, Robertson, and Mijares are the only relievers we plan to keep on any long term plan, there are no future closers in our organization

Offensive

Catchers
Max Stassi and Lou Marson are the future catchers, Pudge is nearing the end of his line.

First Base

Lars Anderson, sadly, is the present and future of our team at first

Second Base
Francisco Oregel is only 21, and has played quite well at Triple A thus far, he may even get a call up before too long, His peak suggests he could be a role player in the big leagues.
Jemile Weeks isn't a bad option, although he is getting near his peak.
Eric Patterson has been the best hitter on the team thus far this year

We feel we are pretty strong at second in comparison to other positions

Third Base
Logan Forsythe isn't what we would call a top prospect by any means, and we feel an improvement could be had.
Neil Walker isn't half bad

Shortstop

Jurickson Profar and Jose Iglesis are both really far away, but have had to play in the big leagues before we wanted them to. We would invite a low round college shortstop to join our squad.

Outfield

Donovan Tate will be our starting centerfielder as soon as he can develop his bat. We don't need a centerfielder, unless it's for depth.
in the corners, our main squad is alright for now, and can be through free agency, so anyone picked for the corners would hopefully be a high ceiling type player. We already have a lot of outfield prospects though, so we don't feel this is any worse than a position such as second base.

To sum up:

Bryce Harper can play many positions, and he will very likely be our top pick, possibly forcing one of Marson or Stassi to first base to compete with Anderson.

We need pitching depth badly, so expect to see many picks there after the first round. A third basemen will be looked for as well.
