Generating Errors

I have version 5.1 and the GForce roster downloads. Version 5.1 was an original purchase not a dowload of a patch. I wasn't getting the error message at first, but after starting a manager career and making modifications to my roster, I am now getting the infamous "OOTP.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. I'm managing San Diego and it crashes everytime I offer a contract entension to Trevor Hoffman (maybe because he's on the Disabled List; it doesn't crash when I attempt to offer it to anyone else. Notice I said "attempt" since none of their pending free agents are worth extending; but I digress.) Also, when I call up "Top Minor League Prospects" and try to play an Exhibition game right after the first pitch, the message comes up. I'm not even bothering to try a league game because I'm sure it'll lock up there too. I'm running Windows NT and got more than what is required including 32 GB of free hard drive space. I'm running 16-bit color. Here is what I have done so far:

1. Upgraded to DirectX 9.0.
2. Changed everything in the league directories and unchecked "read-only."
3. I've turned off in-game sound.
4. I've turned 3D mode off.
5. Downloaded and installed Windows Service Pack.

Is there anything else I can do or do I just need to wait for the next patch?
