For my main league, the Continental League, I've done varying lengths in the past, but settled in at 162 games around the time of the last expansion (to 20 teams) in 1995. Worked out ok with four five-team divisions, two conferences, and limited/no out of conference play.
But prior to the 2009 season I realigned to one 20-team league with no divisions, no conferences, and a balanced schedule. That means the only options for schedule length were multiples of 19. So 152 or 171 games. I picked 171.
I generally watch most of my team's games, with one game day equalling one calendar day. So no big problems with trying to fit in a bunch of seasons. The CBL has been around 22 years, and I've played 22 seasons.
