I've convinced three friends to purchase the game using the historical aspect as the selling point. "Remember the 1989 Cubs? You can play that season out then go on from there into the future." That's worked for different people with different teams. Since I'm in Wisconsin, the other two friends were sold when I told them they could start in the World Series year and go from there. Those teams where filled with Brewers legends.
The Cubs fan didn't finish the 89 season, but instead started with the Cubs back in 67 or so. He played that out for 20+ seasons because he loved drafting real players. It was hilarious how angry he was when Ken Griffey Jr. got a career ending injury at 19.
In terms of marketing, I'd really push the idea of replaying your favorite season from your favorite team as a starting point to get some interest. After that they can look more in depth and see how much OOTP can really do. I started back with 6.5, and starting at some point back in time was the thing that convinced me to buy the game. Now I usually play fantasy leagues.
