Yankees Complete The Sweep
Even though the games were alot more competitive then people give them credit for, the 1927 Yankees still completed a clean sweep of the 1960 Pirates, to no ones real suprize, winning the final game at Forbes Field 4-3 in 11 innings.
Tony Lazzeri hit a solo home run in the top of the first as the Bronx Bombers got off to a 3-0 lead against Pirates starter Harvey Haddix. New York was cruising with Urban Shocker looking smooth and mixing up his pitches.
The Pirates didnt quit however and came back with force as Clemente drove in a run and then Bob Skinner took a first pitch fastball with a man on over the left field wall and tied the game at 3. With Pittsburgh looking confident reliever Bob Shawkey came on to hold off the Pirates and take the game to exrta innings.
In the 11th facing Roy Face, Bob Muesel worked the count and got a pitch to drive, Muesel hit the 2-2 offering 464 feet, a Ruth like shot, to break the tie and put the Yanks on top. In the bottom of the frame Wilcy Moore struck out Roberto Clemente with a man on to end the game and the series. Appropriately enough the Yanks won it with a long ball.
So the 1927 team lives up to the hype and sweeps the Pirates, even though the series was tight througout.
