Royals Stun Yanks, Pull Upset
Comeback in the name of the game for this 1980's Royals team, and as they celebrated on the field at Yankee Stadium after their 6-5 win, few could hardly believe it.
The Royals took three games in a row and won the series, and in the final game 5, did it all coming back from the dead 5 runs down to win the game and the series.
The 96 Yankees took a commanding lead in this game behind Andy Pettitte. The Lefty threw shutout ball into the 8th inning and was given a 5 run lead thanks in part to a 5 hit, three run first inning. New York was given their biggest lead after Bernie Williams drove in two with a single in the 4th.
The amazing thing about the Royal rally in the 8th inning is that it came with two out. Clint Hurdle doubled off of Pettite to drive in two and Joe Torre went to his pen, which was supposen to be his strong point. UL Washington then came up a little later and also doubled to score two more and the Yankees lead was down to one. The goa ahead hit was delivered by Willie Wilson off of Jeff Nelson and the comback was complete.
Dan Quissenberry then had it all to do in the final inning as Jim Frey used 6 diffrent pitchers to get to this point. The Quiz came through and the Royals had done what no one had thought they could do.
