First Place Feels Good For Hot Whites
The Chicago White Stockings sit on to of the National League East and are building an excitement in the midwest as they push on to hold off the Boston Red Caps. The current lead is one game.
The Whites went 6-3 in July and have their explosive offense to thank for much of their success. Chicago is first in runs scored (233) and first in on base percentage (.306). Their prowess was demontrated with huge wins like a 16- win over the Reds and later a 14-1 win over Brooklyn.
The biggest suprize of this team and of most of the league is the sudden emergance of Chicago catcher Dave Pierson. Pierson was struggling deeply for the first three months of the season and word was out that he might even lose his job. The #1 pick in the 1875 draft then started hitting in a big way. In fact Pierson was named player of the month for July and batted an incredible .564 with 16 RBI for the month.

"The light just went on" said Pierson, "I just thank the skipper (Anson) for sticking with me."
The Boston Red Caps are only a game back so much baseball is yet to be played. But with the offesnse so hot and Al Spalding continueing to pitch well (16-12, 2.54) most fans are seeing these two team heading in diffrent directions.
