Yanks Rally For Opening Win
The 1980 KC Royals were just 6 outs away from taking a crucial game one win in their series against the 96 Yankees. But six outs at this level could be an eternity and the Yanks used a 4 run eigth inning to turn this game around and steal it by a score of 5-4.
George Brett showed just how good he as as he homered in his first two atbats to drive in 3 runs off of Yankee starter Andy Pettitte. Brett set a tone early and the Yankee pitching staff will surely treat him diffrently for the rest of the series. Clint Hurdle then homered in the 6th inning and KC was riding high behind Larry Gura up 4-0.
Gura stayed in the game coming out in the 8th hoping to be able to get the match to Royal closer Dan Quissenberry. A Wade Boggs RBI double followed by a Bernie Williams RBI single cut the lead to 4-3. Then Paul ONeil had a great atbat going 3-2 and then singling to left for another RBI to tie the game. By the time Gura was out of the game sub Ruben Rivera had given New York the lead with a sacrafice fly.
John Wetteland then came in in the 9th and ended the Royals day with a frustrating defeat. The Yankees won this one the way they won most of their games in 96, with a dramatic flair. The Royals may surely regret dropping this one.
